Oxford Cambridge & RSA (OCR) Health & Social Care
The health and social care field is vast and includes work within hospitals; health centres or care homes with a variety of clients such as the elderly, children, those with disabilities or special needs. Courses in this discipline leads to NVQ, National Certificate or GNVQ qualifications.

What is OCR National Certificate in Health and Social Care?
The OCR National certificate in Health and Social Care has been developed to recognise candidates’ skills, knowledge and understanding of the Health and social care sector and the settings, job roles, principles and values involved. It accredits candidates’ abilities to carry out a range of tasks and has been designed to accredit candidates’ achievements in a modern and practical way that is relevant to the work place. It does not certificate competence on the job but it is a work-related qualification that will support progression to an NVQ once a candidate is in the work place.

This qualification specifically aims to:

  • Develop candidates’ knowledge and understanding of Health and Social Care.
  • Develop candidates’ skills, knowledge and understanding in contexts that are directly relevant to employment situations, thereby enhancing their employability within the health and social care sector.
  • Develop candidates’ ability to work effectively in a health and social care sector.
  • Enable candidates to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in specialist areas of health and social care and demonstrate the skills to participate in real situations.
  • Encourage progression by assisting into the development of skills, knowledge and understanding that will need to access further education opportunities or occupational training on a full-time or part-time basis.
  • Promote interaction between employers, centres and candidates by relating teaching and assessment to real settings.


Course Structure
There are four mandatory units:
Unit 1- Preparing to give quality care
Unit 2- Communicating with service users in care settings
Unit 3- Practical caring
Unit 4- Hygiene and safety in care settings


The optional units offered by KCBC:
Unit 11-Practical first aid in care settingsUnit 14-Career planning for health and social care sector

Assessment

The assessment for Unit 1 and Unit 4 are externally set and marked by OCR. The remaining two mandatory modules and all of the optional units are centre-assessed and externally moderated by OCR. All units are graded: pass, merit, distinction, and fail. Full award certificates will be graded: pass, merit, distinction.

Entry requirements
This qualification is available to anyone who is capable of reaching the required standards, it has been developed free from any barriers that restrict access or progressions thereby promoting equal opportunities.

Duration:
One Year
